INCENSE IMMERSION I
Botanical & Combustible Incense Traditions

A four-day live online immersion with Persephenie exploring the foundations of botanical incense through historical traditions, natural materials, combustible incense, and hands-on formulation.
Students work with aromatic woods, herbs, spices, resins, binders, and traditional processing techniques while learning how incense has been used throughout history in ritual, atmosphere, and daily life. The immersion includes live demonstrations and a visual slideshow presentation alongside hands-on formulation exercises.
Topics may include:
- combustible incense sticks and cones
- fermented Japanese incense
- bakhoor incense
- South American pom copal incense
- Egyptian kyphi incense
- processing herbs and resins
- incense formulation and combustible structure
- incense traditions across cultures
- sourcing materials and building a personal workshop practice
Designed for artists, perfumers, herbalists, and anyone wishing to develop a deeper relationship to incense through natural materials, historical study, and hands-on practice.
Students receive a required materials and tools list prior to class, along with guidance regarding materials, tools, and sourcing recommendations. Due to international availability, students may need to source certain materials locally or through regional suppliers.
Required tools and workshop materials may include a mortar and pestle, grinder, drying rack, bamboo sticks, jars for storing materials, a scale, and other basic workshop tools. Some tools may already exist within the home or kitchen.
Estimated materials and tools costs are approximately $350–500 USD depending on regional availability, shipping costs, and existing tools.
Materials must be acquired prior to the immersion. One individual 30-minute Zoom session is included before class begins to review materials, tools, sourcing, and workshop setup.
A digital PDF handbook will be emailed to students one week prior to the immersion.
The immersion is divided into two sessions, allowing students time between classes to work with materials, observe burn behavior, and continue developing their formulas and personal workspace.
Temporary replay access to Zoom recordings will be available for 30 days following each session.
